As Bolivia’s largest wood exporter, Exomad saw that local sawmills were producing and burning large amounts of biomass waste. Seeing the potential of biochar as a carbon removal solution, they created the Exomad Green division to take care of this problem. Once it was set up, they needed guidance to navigate the carbon market, ensure high-quality production, have a robust MRV, and connect with global CDR buyers.
Exomad certified their first facility and partnered with Carbonfuture, integrating Carbonfuture MRV+ across their facilities to verify the high quality of their carbon credits. This has enabled them to unlock new revenue streams, partner with leading CDR buyers like Microsoft and Swiss Re, and become the world’s foremost supplier of biochar carbon removal.
Carbonfuture MRV+ provided Exomad Green with rigorous tracking, third-party verification, and certification of their carbon removal activities, enabling them to access a new market with high-quality credits.
Exomad was founded as a producer of high-quality wood products, becoming Bolivia’s top exporter of sustainable timber over the last decade. Known for producing materials for decking, veneers and even musical instruments, the company’s leadership team saw that their timber suppliers were producing large amounts of biomass waste from these operations. This material was usually burned in open pits, releasing large amounts of CO2 into the air and dramatically reducing air quality for the surrounding communities.
As part of their commitment to sustainable operations, the Exomad team began exploring options for what to do with this biomass, which led them to discover biochar and its use as a carbon removal tool. As they were entering the market, they met Carbonfuture and found the incredible benefits and added value of a robust MRV+ system.

By adopting Carbonfuture MRV+ early, Exomad Green ensured that their operations were up to the quality and transparency standards needed to grow in the carbon removal market with quality and credibility.
This approach has been crucial for Exomad, which was able to sell their first batch of carbon removal credits to Microsoft just a few months later. As a leading buyer of CDR, Microsoft prioritizes the importance of biomass sustainability and the quality and integrity of the credits they purchase. An independent digital MRV like Carbonfuture MRV+, which meticulously tracks each batch of biochar for third-party verification and certification, was essential for securing the deal.
Carbonfuture’s MRV+ also perfectly aligned with Exomad Green’s business needs. Because data collection could be automated and prepared for certification — even integrating directly with Exomad Green’s ERP via the Carbonfuture API — it allowed credits to be issued faster. This was vital for Exomad Green, helping accelerate their revenue stream and enabling them to act quickly upon their ambitious goals. They’ve just launched their second project in Riberalta, Bolivia, which went online in August of 2024, and have plans to build a third facility in Guarayos.
When fully operational, these three projects will sequester more than 360,000 tonnes of CO2 every year. The biochar produced is provided for free to local farmers as a soil amendment, helping enhance crop yields and bolstering the local economy. Exomad Green’s work is already making a significant impact on local communities: by converting biomass into biochar instead of burning it, acute respiratory infections in Concepción have dropped by 89% since 2021, and cases of conjunctivitis have decreased by more than 80%.
